DIVORCE... THE NEW BLACK?

While riding the train in Washington, DC, a young African American couple walked on hand-and-hand. Upon first glance, the two seemed happy, united, and most of all - in love. Reading their body language, the two obviously seemed "chipper" and happy to be in one another's company. They then lightheartedly sat down in their seat, and I happened to glance at the womans left hand. There, she proudly wore her well polished engagement ring.

Just then I realized why the two were so happy. NEWLYWEDS!

That same day, I was talking to one of my closest friends, on the train, after both of us saw the couple, he said, "Marriage doesn't even exist anymore." I was confused, and hearing a statement like that coming from a young African American male terrified me. According to Divorverates.org, "50% of all marriages in the America end in divorce."

50%, ya'll.

Okay, let me break that down, if you have 10 people who get married, 5 of which will soon be slashing tires, melting rings, and fighting over custody. Obviously we all know that all marriages don't end on negative terms, however as a young adult, this number is astonishing. I mean, I soon want to be happily married. (after I make my first mill, purchase my OWN home, blah blah blah) But the fear of being divorced always seems to creep in my mind.

But WHY do people get married and more often then not end up in divorce?

I personally grew up in a home where my parents divorces too. Due to differences of opinions, money issues, and all the other issues that seem to arise when one is sharing a roof with a human of the opposite sex. But do people not know how to talk things out anymore? People are so quick to give up on each other. So quick to utter the words "Forget it." My mentor has been married for 30 + years. Yo, I'm not going to lie - that's a lonnnng ass time to be with just ONE person. I'm more than positive that these two have fought, disagreed, and slammed doors when the other person was downstairs just so they could hear it. Time, money, emotions, energy, all that has been invested into that ONE person. Children have been brought into the world on behalf of them to carry the torch of the families name.

In 2008, the word "Family" has been boiled down to the single-parent, the grandparents raising the kids, children born out of wedlock, orphans. Rarely, especially in the African American community do you see the "picture perfect" family. Meaning, mommy, daddy, and maybe "cousin and dem". The point is, we have to get our families back. Fathers need to come home and mothers need to stop working two jobs. Parents have to starting setting examples for the kids. These kids are like sponges, and whether we know it or not - they soak in any and everything that the parents do.

Being married is sacred, intimate, a close union of two people. It isn't an excuse to spend thousands of dollars on a dress, cake, and fancy table sets. Two can be married without the legal paperwork, the fancy ceromony, and the bridesmaids. You ever wonder why we wear wedding rings? The wedding band is symbolism of the link between two people. It isn't made out of wood, or plastic - a material that can easily be broken or burned. It is made out of metal, molded just for that one persons finger. It takes intense heat to melt a piece of metal, and even still it never looses its natural compound. That diamond? Yeah, that fat ass piece of polished, refurbished rock symbolizes the time and energy it takes to have a successful relationship. Diamonds take years to be created in nature. The bonds are formed when carbon exists at very high temperatures and under very high pressure. Natural diamonds are made very deep in the Earth, below the surface where high temperatures and pressure exist naturally. The high pressures are produced by the weight of rocks pressing down on it. This is how the diamond comes to be. To say the least, this is something to be CHERISHED.

I mean, look at the couple pictured above. Oh by the way, that is Mr. and Mrs. David Allen's Formal Portrait in 1890. Two words - Power and Dignity. That couple is unbreakable, and I can sense that through an old, grainy film photo from the 1800!!!

Divorce isn't the new black and will never be if we understand the significance of the word marriage. People need to know who they are marrying and realize the vows say, better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.

When I watched the above video this morning, I felt an enormous sense of pride to be an African American man. As the title of this post states, I got goosebumps at the site of all those people, of all races, colors, and creed, announce "I" in support of Barack Obama. It was less than 150 years ago that slavery was abolished. It was about 50 years ago that America's schools were desegragated. And now, we have a a Black man running for president? I remember when I was younger that when a Black child answered the question of"What do you want to be when you grow up?" with "I want to be president of the United States!", people awed and smiled at the thought, but no one really believed it. But, today, well last night, that hopeless dream was given the chance to become a reality.

Now, I must say, Barack Obama is great, not just because he is Black. His skin color goes a long way and expalins his charisma, swagger, and confidence. But, the real reason that he is great is because he changed the mindset of a generation. Take a minute to let it soak in. Changed the mindset of a GENERATION! Excuse my language, but who the FUCK does that anymore? Since the civil rights movement, there hasn't been another movement or progression in American culture until now. We had gotten comfortable with how things were. We made a giant leap but never continued making steps toward true equality. That is until now. If Barack Obama is elected into the presidency, I hope Black people all over the world realize that the saying "Nothing is impossible" is an aphorism, or fact of life and I hope that white people will realize that we are all not thugged out, basketball playing, fried chicken eating, dummies, who rap and drive cars with spinning rims. I hope that we will finally be able to get out of that corner that we have been painted into by the media and ourselves, really. As the future leaders of this country, it is time for all of us to assume the responsibility. Most of you all reading this are at least 18 years old and in college. I'm 20 years old and I go to Temple University, a predominantly white university, and I own a business. I, as all of us are, am a product of the struggle that our parents experienced and made it through. They have carried us a long way, but it is our time now. Go read a book, get involved in politics, save some of that loan money, buy a house without a subprime mortgage, correct that bad ass kid on your block, and give back to your commnities. It is really our world now. Don't you want to leave a legacy of your own?

Tonight, Barack Obama, the first African American to ever have a serious chance of becoming President of the United States, will accept the nomination from the Democratic party LIVE from Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado on the 45th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech" and the March on Washington. Just as Dr. King professed, we are on our way to the "promised land." He won't physically get there with us, but in a way, he will because we each carry a little bit of him inside of us. I employ all of you to watch history unfold tonight on CNN at 10pm. I'm sure that you will be getting goosebumps of your own.

White supremacists cleared of gun plot to assassinate Barack Obama. Three men held in a suspected race-hate plot to kill Barack Obama will not face any charges relating to an attempt on his life.

The authorities in Denver said that even though they had high-powered sniper rifles and were racists who said they wanted to kill Mr Obama to stop him from becoming President, the case did not meet the legal standard to charge the men with a federal offence.

What the FUCK else do you need???!?!?!?!

Tharin Gartrell, 28, Shawn Adolf (haha...typical), 33, and Dwaine Johnson, 32, are set to face charges of possessing firearms and the drug methamphetamine following their arrest.

The US Attorney for Denver, Troy Eid, said that while investigators were keeping an "open mind" an intensive investigation had found no evidence of a credible plan to kill Mr Obama as he accepted the Democratic nomination at Denver's Invesco football stadium tomorrow.

"There is a difference between a true threat and the reported racist rantings of drug abusers," said Mr Eid. "This involved a gang of meth-heads who were all impaired at the time." The plot was only uncovered after police seized two high-velocity rifles, camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest and telescopic gun sights during a routine traffic stop.

One of the gang - who has the surname Adolf and was wearing a swastika ring - jumped from a sixth-floor window to escape after the FBI swooped on two hotels in the city. Another denied being part of the plot, but reportedly said of Obama: 'Blacks don't belong in political office. He ought to be shot.'

They were held on $1 million bail.

The foiled 'hit' has sent shockwaves through the convention crowds pouring into the Colorado capital for the 47-year-old senator's Democrat coronation. It heightened fears that Mr Obama is a target for the kind of politically-charged assassinations that claimed the lives of icons including John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The Illinois senator has been under protection for more than a year following a string of death threats.

According to an arrest warrant "Adolf said that he wanted to kill Obama and additionally stated that he would specifically use a sniper rifle and high powered scope, and find high ground to set up and shoot Obama." An unnamed female witness who drove to Denver with Adolf told Colorado State Patrol officers about possible threats against Mr Obama.

The witness said Adolf and Gartrell had talked "negatively" about Mr Obama using racial epithets. She believed they were "white supremacists." She said they "could not believe how close he was to becoming President".

FBI agents called to investigate the threat soon established that it was not credible. An FBI source said: "Even though Gartrell and Adolf had high-powered rifles they would not have been in a position to carry out an assassination. They could have not reached the intended target. These were just a couple of rednecks thinking out loud what they'd like to do."

According to the U.S. television network CBS, Johnson said the other two men 'had planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech'.

Johnson reportedly told the network: 'He don't belong in political office. Blacks don't belong in political office. He ought to be shot.'

The FBI said that at least two of the suspects - thought to include Adolf - have ties to White Supremacist groups.

"Don't let your fears keep you from accomplishing your goals."

ATLANTA ARTIST ENDORSED BY BARACK OBAMA

A portrait of Senator Barack Obama, created by renowned artist Gilbert Young, was recently awarded an unprecedented honor when Senator Obama endorsed the dual portrait by autographing the original work along with the artist.

"Obama said I made him look good," the Atlanta-based artist smiled. "I told him, that's my job!"

The portrait, entitled "History + Hope = Change" will be used to create a series of commemorative posters, limited edition prints, and a very special limited edition full-sized serigraph. Proceeds from sales of the items will benefit the Obama for America campaign. Posters will sell for $20, signed and numbered prints will start at $1500 and will be packaged with an autographed photo of Young and Barack signing the original work of art.

Young created the portrait after receiving an invitation to attend a reception for the Senator during the NAACP Annual Convention recently held in Cincinnati.

"I handed my card to Obama and he said he knew my work," Young said. "Then Obama called me a legend. It was one of the highlights of my career. I've never been so proud of my own work."

The card Obama received featured a work of art that has become Young's trademark. It depicts a man reaching down over a wall for another man's hand. Young considers the image, entitled "He Ain't Heavy," to be a personal statement on social responsibility. "He Ain't Heavy" has sold in galleries and gift shops across the U.S. and in select cities around the world for nearly 30 years.

Young will be in Denver August 25-29 to sign his historic "History + Hope = Change" posters and prints during the 2008 Democratic National Convention as a featured artist at the 9th annual After 5 Jazz & Blues Festival held in the historic Five Points Community. He will also appear at a reception hosted by Akente Express Gallery.

As a proud daughter of born Jamaicans, I look at this video in complete awe of the talent and - WAIT... BUMP THAT!!

Did you seee this guy?! 9.71? And what gets me is the fact the dude ran it like it was FUN for him. I mean, by 50 meters, he's looking over his shoulder like, "I wish ya'll would try to catch me!" The guy came to China to show-out. I love how slightly arrogant he is...LOL! The other day, following this race, a friend of mine asked me, "What do ya'll eat down there in Jamaica?" I simply replied, "Its the mango juice."

And it allll made sense. lol.

But it all seriousness, I was talking to one of my mothers friends and he explained that he was e-mailing back and forth to one of his Asian friends. She of course rooting for her native country (wherever it was) and he rooting for the Americans, they decided to place bets to see what country would win he most medals. In the e-mail she expressed her concern of the bet by saying in her broken English,

"These Olympics aren't fair - the white and the blacks are good at speed and agility and the yellows are good at flexibility and precision"

HA! How true is that as bad as it sounds? The "yellows." Are they really yellow? LOL!

As I sat in my apartment going through trash and crap that I brought with me from home(I'm the # 1 pack rat), I came accross a business card/ flyer that caught my eye. I remembered who I got it from, some guy in Little 5 Points who was selling dope T-shirts out of one of those lil shops. He made, and printed them himself, and I would have helped out with his hustle, but I didn't have cash on me that day. The joints were so fly though...

But anyway, I remember him giving me his card so I could connect with him on a later note. I never took the chance to read the card, due to me always on the go, so I guess it resurfaced for a reason.

The card carried valuable information on it.

On the front of the card were the words Black Is Beautiful to the side of a gorgeous black woman with an afro, leaning her head to the side. The websites followed. On the backside were the words:

"AFTA-1 creates sounds to take you away from this world
WMO: You grew up listening to classic soul on the radio. What was the music scene like in your home town? Did you have any mentors?

AFTA-1: Influential sounds in my life have gone through constant progression, so I can’t necessarily say that soul music alone was responsible for inspiration. I’ve gone from bumping gangsta rap when my folks weren’t listening to falling asleep to classic soul and slow jams, all of which i searched for on my own and had to, since the music scene in my home town was pretty dead. No real venues or places dedicated to any kind of art or recreation besides bowling and movie theaters…had to do our own thing.

WMO: What’s in your record collection?

AFTA-1: Too many things to accurately represent the collection. Stuff from Lonnie Liston Smith to Tangerine Dream to Herbie Hancock, some psychedelic, some reggae, some Brazilian funk…a little bit of everything. A good chef keeps his seasoning cabinet well stocked.

WMO: If Aftathoughts Vol.1 is a soundtrack, what’s the visual?

AFTA-1: Well, I would say it is a soundtrack intended for the listener to create their own visual. I think different people resonate with different elements within the music, so an accompanying visual can never be just one thing...."
