Pieter Hugo is a South African-based photographer. He has produced three monographs: Looking Aside (2006), Messina/Musina (2007) and The Hyena & Other Men (2007). A self-taught photographer and filmmaker, Pieter Hugo’s projects range from tracking cultural shifts in Birmingham, UK for Colors magazine, to photographing the Hyena people of Nigeria. Hugo’s sharp eye brings a dark humour to his commercial campaigns. The Image seen here is from Pieter’s series of images called “Looking Aside: South African Studio Portraits” He also has another series focusing on Hyena’s that I find it transfixing. To see men standing next to what most people in western culture would consider a wild beast is pretty impressive.
